TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002 Wampanoag leader and author Russell Peters passed away after a long illness at a Massachusetts hospital on Sunday. He was 73. Peters led the tribe's land claim fight, which was ultimately rejected by a federal appeals court and declined by the Supreme Court. He also sought to win federal recognition for the tribe, which is still pending. Get the Story:
