Editorial: Abuse of power

MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2002

In an editorial, The Denver Post blasts the Department of Interior for not withholding millions of dollars in payments to American Indians.

The paper says the department used a court order aimed at protecting Indian trust systems as an "excuse" to not send out checks. And when the department finally got around to distributing money, the paper says it was not in the right amount and not everyone has gotten his or her funds.

"The real problems are DOI's lack of accountability and determination to get the job done," the paper writes of the trust debacle.
