Editorial: Shameful treatment on trust

FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2002

In an editorial, The Bangor (Maine) Daily News criticizes the Department of Interior for its "culture of condescension" towards Indian people.

The paper says the Internet shutdown is just one in a long line of problems that have never been corrected since the inception of the trust more than a century ago. "The cause is not bugs, but pique," the paper writes.

"This return to the Stone Age is the culmination of 150 years of Interior mucking up these trust accounts."

The paper also says trust reform "appears to be little more than the appearance of activity," a plan that was launched during the Clinton administration. Secretary Gale Norton has now rejected the blueprint which had been guiding reform.
