Tribes calling for action on shooting

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 A number of Plains tribes are calling for justice in response to an incident in which two white teenagers shot a gun at a group of Lakota girls. The incident occurred after the Crow Creek Tribe's girls basketball team played a game in Miller, South Dakota. Two white teenagers were brought to face charges for the shooting. The Crow Creek Tribe, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribe want the U.S. Attorney's office to bring federal civil rights charges. Racial taunts were shouted during the game and continued afterwards, said witnesses. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Oglala Sioux Tribe might also act. Get the Story:
