County refusing burial to Chinook woman

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2001 An Oregon county official has recommended a 90-year old Chinook woman not be allowed to be put to rest in the cemetery where her ancestors are buried. Winifred Basch has talked repeatedly of being buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, said her son, Richard Basch. But Clatsop County manager Jim Azumano doesn't want that to happen ince the county hasn't allowed anyone to be buried there in more than 30 years. The son is hoping to convince the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners not to heed the recommendation. The commission will hold a hearing tonight to address the issue. The Chinook Nation received federal recognition earlier this year but the Bush administration has decided to review it. Get the Story:
