MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2001

In a unanimous decision, the Oregon Geographic Names Board has removed the word "squaw" from three place names in the state.

The locations affected are in the Willamette National Forest and include Squaw Mountain. The mountain will be renamed Latiwi Mountain.

The State Legislature in June approved a bill to rename all "squaw" place names. Similar efforts have succeeded in other states, including Maine.

Indian women have protested the failure of a "squaw" bill in Idaho.
