Athabaskan elder passes on

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2001 Athabaskan elder and educator Effie Kokrine died in her sleep on Friday. She was 82. Kokrine won the Women's North American Sled Dog Championship for three years from 1952-1954 and continued to run in races up until recently. She was a schoolteacher in the Fairbanks School District and was named educator of the year by the Interior Native Educators recently. Kokrine was in Tanana to attend a memorial potlatch for her sister-in-law when she died. Get the Story:
