Ill. fire department keeps Indian head

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 The village board of Fox Lake, Illinois, last week voted to remove an Indian head and headdress from the logos of most departments and replace it with a sailboat. But the Fire Department has been allowed to keep the logo. Chief Stu Hoehne says it honors the historic Fox Tribe who used to live in the area. Leonard Malatare, secretary of the Native American Educational Services, however, says the Fox Tribe, now part of the Sac and Fox Nation never lived in the area. And even if the tribe did, the headdress is inaccurate. Fox Lake leaders say if they had heard opposition from the Sac and Fox Nation, other tribes or area Indian groups, they might have voted differently. Get the Story:
