Residents want Pequot investigation

SEPTEMBER 22, 2000 Annexation, No! Pequots, No! Investigation, Yes! No, its not the slogan of the Caucasian Nation, but it might be, now that members of a group called "No Annexation" have been collecting signatures in hopes of pressing the Connecticut Congressional delegation into investigating the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act. The group is composed of residents of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston. Leaders from the towns have been vocal in their opposition to the tribe. Like the towns, the group wants Congress to investigate how much land the tribe were granted in the Settlement Act and if members of the current tribe are descendants of the historical tribe. They also want the BIA to rescind preliminary recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot tribes. Get the Story:
