SEPTEMBER 20, 2000 Former Representative Maria Cantwell, endorsed by 12 tribes in Washington, defeated challenger Deborah Senn in the Democratic party primary on Tuesday and will now face Slade Gorton in the race for Senate. Cantwell has spent a large amount of money on her campaign. An original employee of Real Networks, the company which makes the Real Audio player, Cantwell spent $5.1 million of her own money on the campaign. Nevertheless, she faces a strong challenge from Gorton, long opposed by many in Indian Country. Gorton responded by telling the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that Cantwelll is a "worthy opponent." The defeated Senn said that Gorton is in "terrible shape" for the race. One poll shows Cantwell leading Gorton 46 percent to 41 percent. A Seattle Times / NorthWest Cable News Poll shows Gorton leading Cantwell 44 percent to 42 percent. Get the Story:
