SEPTEMBER 19, 2000

Zuni artist Carlton Jamon has created a special chalice that Pope John Paul II will use to canonize Katherine Drexel, a nun who founded the St. Catherine Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Jamon was asked by an order of nuns to create the chalice. It will be used by the Popo in a Mass during which Drexel will be canonized.

Drexel founded the school over 100 years ago as part of her goal to improve education for Native Americans. It closed in 1998.
