SEPTEMBER 15, 2000

Organizers of the "American Indian Leaders: Red Power and Tribal Politics" hope that the conference meets one of its goals: To encourage new Indian activism.

The conference, which begins today at Kansas University, will be attended Dennis Banks and Clyde Bellecourt, founders of the American Indian Movement. In the 1960s and 1970s, the movement led to increased activism to protect indigenous rights.

The keynote speaker will be Ada Deer, former head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
