SEPTEMBER 12, 2000 Vice-Presidential candidate Winona LaDuke rolled into the Ninth Annual Feast of Green Corn and Dance on Thursday, vowing to work on local tribal leaders who endorsed Democrats Al Gore and Joe Lieberman. In addition, she will be presenting the Ingrid Washinawatok Memorial Special dance on Friday evening, as part of the tribe's annual powwow, also known as Schemitzun. Washinawatok, a member of the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin, was LaDuke's former dancing partner who was killed in Columbia last year. Addressing various issues, LaDuke said a Department of Tribal Recognition needs to be created in order to recognize tribes. She said it should be led by tribal elders from all over the country. She also said there can never be enough Indian land, since only 4 percent today is owned by tribes. Get the Story:
