Amid widespread allegations of discrimination at the agency, Carol Browner, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, is calling for an investigation into an incident in which an African-American employee was ordered to clean a toilet for her in 1993.

Earlier this month, the EPA was ordered to pay $600,000 to a black senior manager. Other employees are planning on filing a class-action lawsuit against the agency, alleging pay discrepancies, harassment, arbitrary performance evaluation, retaliation, and being passed over for promotions.

Last week, William Yellowtail, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, was suspended from his post as Regional Administration in Denver, Colorado. Yellowtail is the first Native American to hold such a post in the EPA and was alleged to have solicited campaign contributions, a violation of the Hatch Act.
