Pueblo keeps Pecos promise

AUGUST 7, 2000

A mass honoring those who left Pecos Pueblo in 1838 to join their relatives in Jemez Pueblo is held every August, as a promise to the people of Pecos.

Over 200 people attended the mass, which was held yesterday at the old church at Pecos National Historical Park. It is held the Sunday closest to August 2, the feast day of Our Lady of Angels in Jemez.

In 1999, over 2,000 ancestors of Pecos were repatriated to Jemez Pueblo, the largest NAGPRA repatriation to date. They were hand walked back to the park and reburned.
