EPA bias alleged

AUGUST 31, 2000

Widespread bias is being alleged at the Environmental Protection Agency and employees held a protest on Wednesday to call attention to racial and sexual discrimination at the agency.

Earlier this month, the EPA was ordered to pay $600,000 to a black senior manager. Other employees are planning on filing a class-action lawsuit against the agency, alleging pay discrepancies, harassment, arbitrary performance evaluation, retaliation, and being passed over for promotions.

Last week, William Yellowtail, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, was suspended from his post as Regional Administration in Denver, Colorado. Yellowtail is the first Native American to hold such a post in the EPA and was alleged to have solicited campaign contributions, a violation of the Hatch Act.
