THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2001

The United States Civil Rights Commission will being holding a meeting on racism in Alaska today in Anchorage.

The two-day meeting was scheduled at the request of the Alaska Federation of Naties and the commission's Alaska State Advisory Committee. They had protested Governor Tony Knowles' inaction on the issue in the wake of unsolved rapes and murders of Alaska Natives and other issues.

Knowles held off on acting until February, when he formed a commission on tolerance. It was created after three white teenagers in January videotaped themselves attacking Alaska Natives with a paint-ball gun.

The Commission on Tolerance has since held three hearings.
