AUGUST 2, 2000 The New London Day ponders the GOP platform regarding Native Americans in a report today. The party platform, which was reported by Indianz.Com on Monday, was drafted by John J. Guevremont, a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut. The paper says that the platform doesn't mention federal recognition. Guevremont said recognition is a local issue and doesn't belong in a party platform. The paper also states that some language in the platform appears vague or without elaboration. The paper doesn't mention the trust fund litigation and persons quoted in the article don't mention it specifically. Christopher Healy, a Connecticut delegate and a member of the platform committee along with Guevremont, said "We believe in the sovereign rights of these nations." Get the Story:
