AUGUST 11, 2000 As he has been promising, Kevin Gover will leave his post as Assistant Secretary of Interior, Indian Affairs and return to practice law before the inauguration of the new president. Gover, Pawnee from Oklahoma, is a lawyer trained in Indian law. His former practice was located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Some newspapers and media, particularly those in the East, have attempted to tie his departure with some of the recent controversies over federal recognition. But Gover is a political appointee and has always made it clear he would stay only until the end of the current administration. Tribal leaders credit Gover with being honest. He has also helped raise the budget for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Get the Story:
