JUNE 8, 2000

The upcoming June 13 election for the Mille Lacs Ojibwe in Minnesota promises to be a close race as Melanie Benjamin challenges incumbent Marge Anderson. Anderson has led the Mille Lacs to financial prosperity and national prominence as an excellent tribal leader, but many within the tribe have questioned her tight grip on the tribe's finances. Benjamin in particular has addressed the concerns of urban Mille Lacs living in the Twin Cities.
