Tribal leader runs for House

Mary Thomas, former Governor of Gila River Indian Community, has filed to run for the Arizona State Legislature. As a Democrat, Thomas has been approached by the Democratic National Committee to run for Congress. Loretta Avent, a former White House liaison for Native Americans, serves as Thomas' political advisor.

Avent told the Arizona Republic that "if Indians want real political clout, they're going to have to go off the reservation."
