AMA targets Gorton

JUNE 28, 2000

Yet another group is opposed to Senator Slade Gorton bid (R-Wash) to get re-elected to Congress. This time it is the American Medical Association (AMA).

Senator Gorton voted against the medical bill of rights which needed just one vote to pass earlier this legislative term. The bill would give all 161 million Americans with private health insurance the right to sue insurers when harmed by delays or denial of treatment.

Gorton faces a challenge from candidate Maria Cantwell for the Senate seat. Native Americans have long opposed Gorton, who is considered anti-sovereignty and anti-Indian.

The AMA campaign begins today with an ad placed in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. You can view a PDF of the ad, Senator Gorton, It's Time To Make History, from the AMA site.
