Marge Anderson concedes defeat

JUNE 14, 2000 Incumbent Mille Lacs Ojibwe chair Marge Anderson conceded defeat in Tuesday's hotly contested election. The tribe's executive director Gary Frazer told The Minneapolis Star Tribune that challenger Melanie Benjamin was leading the race by a more than 2 to 1 margin. Anderson helped lead her Minnesota tribe to financial solvency and national acclaim. But Benjamin struck a chord with voters, calling for more government accountability and how to spend money from the casino that has brought the tribe, but not as many residents, to wealth.
