The state of Alabama has voted to make the second Monday in October serve as both Columbus Day and American Indian Heritage Day. The move was praised by tribal leaders in Alabama as a step in recognizing the state's Indian population. In other states, there are days honoring Native Americans but the decision creates the first official state holiday for American Indians in the country.
