Police Janklow deny racial profiling

MAY 30, 2000 Law enforcement in Charles Mix County and South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow deny racial profiling by officers in the county. Since criminal jurisdiction over 220,000 acres of the Yankton Sioux reservation was returned to the state in 1999, Indian residents have complained of being targeted. In April, the Argus Leader reported that the Wagner police department routinely run license-plate checks on Indian-occupied vehicles but rarely for white residents. However, on Monday the police chief has now said checks are only run on "suspicious" vehicles. At the current rate of arrests of Indians in the county, four times as many Yankton Sioux will be charged this year as compared to 1999. Get the Story:
