Whale hunt begins again

MAY 30, 2000 Members of the John Parker whaling family took to the seas for the third time this past Memorial Day weekend. A 10-permit was issued to the family by the Makah Nation Whaling Commission, which will expire on June 7th. Like the previous two attempts by the whaling crew, hunters returned empty handed Monday afternoon. Anti-whaling activists continued to protest the event, but no skirmishes were reported. One activist was injured last month when she attempted to interrupt the whaling family. A Coast Guard boat overtook jet skis. She has been released on her own recognizance for violating the 500-yard moving exclusionary zone (MEZ) and is not allowed on Makah land. Protesters raised their voices in a related incident over what they called a "whaling tool" being fashioned at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center. Search our site for all stories on the Makah:
