EDITORIAL: Pequot tribe too affluent

MAY 2, 2001 In an editorial today, the Norwich Bulletin suggests the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is probably too successfully to have more land taken into trust for them. The paper says a "less affluent tribe" could show more "significant reason" to have the government place land into trust than the Pequot Tribe could. The paper says that if Attorney General Richard Blumenthal successfully argues the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act doesn't apply to the Pequot Tribe, land into trust applications for other tribes might not be affected. The paper doesn't consider whether other tribes in the 2nd Circuit would be affected by such a holding. Get the Story:
