MAY 18, 2000 A South Dakota state lawmaker said the state must stop denying its racial problems if it ever intends to improve relations among its Native American population. A US Civil Rights Commission issued a report in March 2000 criticizing the state for disparate treatment in the justice system. Governor Bill Janklow has been critical of the report, saying many of its claims are unsubstantiated. Get the Story:
