EDITORIAL: Yakama alcohol ban

APRIL 9, 2001 In an editorial today, The Seattle Times says the Yakama Nation of Washington should be congratulated for banning alcohol sales on the reservation even though the US Attorney says it is nof entirely enforceable. The tribe enacted the ban as a means to combat alcoholism. James Shively, US Attorney for Eastern Washington, said it won't apply to non-Indian businesses sellijng alcohol on non-Indian owned land. Nonetheless, the paper says Shively's decision that other cases will be evaluated one by one is a good step to reducing alcohol abuse. Get the Story:
