Some 1,000 Indian teens are in Portland, Oregon, this week for the 26th annual Northwest Indian Youth Conference.

The conference is a mix of the old and the new: teens attend workshops on traditional culture to gang violence. The teens are also a mix of the old and the new: they are pow-wow singers, rappers, dancers, skaters. But above all, they are learning how to become leaders.

Speakers have included author / poet / screenwriter / budding comedian Sherman Alexie and Dylan Lodge, a high school student talked about her effort to stop an inaccurate school band performance.
