APRIL 4, 2001

In an editorial today, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says a proposed expansion of the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad would be beneficial to the economy in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The paper says there are environmental issues that should be addressed before the project should proceed. But it says it would bring jobs, improve safety, and stem population loss.

Two agencies of the Department of Interior are opposing the expansion. A broad coalition of Indians and non-Indians oppose it as well.
