Woman sentenced for Native attack

APRIL 30, 2001

A Caucasian woman was sentenced last Thursday to six months in prison for assaulting two Alaska Natives with a baseball bat.

The incident occurred in March 2000 when Tomika Cox attacked the Alaska Natives at a Fairbanks fast food restaurant. The attack sent a 41-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman to the hospital.

The status of Cox's alleged partner in the crime is not reported by the Associated Press.

Although authorities say the attack could have been racially motiviated, there wasn't enough evidence to prove so. Cox had told police she was afraid of Alaska Natives.

Cox was also ordered to pay $933 restitution for one of the victims' medical bills and to serve 75 hours of community service, possibly with a Native group.
