Tourism director quits over Native remarks

APRIL 30, 2001 Faron Owen, executive director of the Kenai Peninsula Tourism Marketing Council, resigned from his position last Thursday after remarks he made about Alaska Natives. The board of the council had already reprimanded Owen for his remarks. They met again and said Owen's resignation was necessary to prevent the council from being hurt. A number of groups have already threatened to pull out of the council. Owens admitted he made insensitive remarks about "drunk Natives" on March 30. Get the Story:
