Oklahoma Cherokee Chief Chad Smith will lead a delegation back to the tribe's ancestral capital in New Echota, Georgia this week. Eastern Cherokee Band Photo © Eastern Cherokee Along with other Indian nations in the east, the Oklahama Cherokee were removed from their ancestral territories by the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

The delegation hopes to hold a joint council meeting in the fall.
