'Last' full-blood Kaw dies

APRIL 27, 2000 William Mehojah, 82, died this past Sunday at Omaha Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He was regarded to be the last full-blood Kaw, or Kanza. He was born in Washunga, Ohio. The Kanza tribe's land was reduced from 20 million acres across northern Kansas and into Nebraska and Missouri to 2 million acres in 1825. The westward expansion of settlers led to the diminishment. In 1873, the federal goverment moved the tribe to northern Oklahoma. Services for Mehojah are scheduled today at the John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel, 1010 N. 72nd St, in Omaha. Get the Story:
