EDITORIAL: Mascot statement not enough

APRIL 26, 2001

In an editorial today, The Spokesman Review says the recent statement by the US Commission on Civil Rights on the use of Indians as mascots was not enough to generate intelligent debate on the issue.

The paper says the statement was too extreme in saying the use of Indians as mascots at non-Indian schools could violate anti-discrimination laws. The paper says Indian mascots aren't necessarily the problem; its that the mascots, logos, symbols, or nicknames aren't treated with proper respect.
