Joseph Burton De La Cruz (Quinault), 62, suffered a heart attack and died Sunday at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. De La Cruz was a strong Indian rights advocate, having served as president of the Quinault Nation from 1970 to 1994, president of the National Congress of the American Indian for two terms, president of the National Tribal Chairman's Association, and president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.
Services for De La Cruz will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, April 22, at the Quinault Casino, followed by dinner at the Civic Center. Joe will be buried at Inchelium on Monday. Contact the Quinault tribal office at (360) 276-8211 or (888) 616-8211 for more information.
