EDITORIAL: Honor roadless initiative

MARCH 21, 2001

In an editorial today, The Seattle Times says the Bush administration should not seek to delay implementation of a US Forest Service plan which limits road construction on nearly 60 million acres of forest land.

The paper says opponents to the initiative are unfairly characterizing them as a "last minute" decision by the Clinton administration. Although the rules were finalized in January, they were under consideration for nearly two years.

The paper points out that Freshman Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) asked Attorney General John Ashcroft if he would uphold the ban. The paper says Ashcroft claimed he would defend the government's environmental laws but the administration's attempt to have them delayed is a broken promise.
