Woman passes on whaling tradition
MARCH 19, 2001

Every March, Priscilla Sage gathers a group of Barrow women to begin sewing seal hides onto boats used during whaling expeditions.

Sage is called the leader of the group due to her experience. She learned the tradition from her mother, who told her to pass it on to future generations of women so the practice wouldn't die out.
