MARCH 19, 2001 In an editorial, Lance C. Johnson, managing editor of The New London Day, says the leaders of three Connecticut towns who have been fighting the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on a number of issues should relax before meeting again with the tribe. Johnson says some of the towns' actions after a March 12 meeting are questionable. He writes: "In the past few days, the town leaders trashed the concept of Native American sovereignty, ridiculed an Indian prayer ceremony and a gift, insinuated that tribal members do not consider themselves Americans and questioned the integrity of Mashantucket leaders. All this during a process designed to heal a region divided." Johnson has been criticized over the past weeks by readers of The Day and local politicians for writing editorials which don't outright criticize the tribe. The tribe plans on offering a settlement to its land dispute with the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston on or by April 9. Get the Story:
