MARCH 14, 2001

Alaska Governor Tony Knowles on Tuesday called the paint-ball gun attacks of three white teenagers on Alaska Natives "sickening" and has set up a panel to discuss the racially-charged incident which made national headlines last month.

Knowles said the panel within a month would come back with recommendations on ways the state should respond, which could include enacting a hate crimes law. Authorities in Anchorage have called the attacks a hate crime but the state has no hate crimes law.

The three teenagers made an amateur video of their January 14 attacks on Alaska Natives in Anchorage. Charges have yet to be filed although police spokesman Ron McGee said the teens might be charged this week.
