FEBRUARY 27, 2001

The Idaho Legislature's House State Affairs Committee on Monday voted 10-9 to kill a measure that would have renamed all 93 "squaw" place names in the state.

The two state representatives who voted against the bill said it was unnecessary. Their districts include parts of the Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene, and Kootenai reservations.

The bill had passed in the Senate by 33-1. It would have set up a committee to rename the "squaw" place names and was supported by tribes in the state.
