FEBRUARY 26, 2001 An editorial published today by The New London Day says that towns in southeastern Connecticut deserve a fair shot at receive more money from the expansion of two tribal casinos. The paper says the towns located nearest the casinos have been "ruined" by the casinos. The three towns are located nearest the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's casino. The expansion of the tribe's casino and the casino owned by the nearby Mohegan Tribe are expected to bring in an estimated $30 million a year. The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments will get about $10 million of that money, of which they have proposed to distribute more to towns most affected by the casinos: Ledyard, North Stonington, Preston, and Montville.
