FEBRUARY 23, 2001

In an editorial today, Lance C. Johnson, managing editor of The New London Day, says its time for three Connecticut towns and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation to resolve their long legal and political dispute.

Johnson says the tribe is willing to talk with the towns and that residents should press town leaders to mediate. Johnson says the tribe's intention to take about 1,200 acres of land into trust are enough reasons to press town leaders into discussion.

Johnson also says the tribe may end up winning its legal and legislative battles. But he says the tribe might be worried about the increased scrutiny over tribal issues and therefore should seek work towards resolution with the towns.

The towns and the state of Connecticut have asked the Supreme Court to review a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decision which upheld the right of the Department of Interior to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe.
