Athletes face prejudice

FEBRUARY 16, 2001

Looking for competition on the basketball court, Indian athletes in South Dakota often find racial prejudice instead.

Parents, coaches, and others say that young Indian athletes are treated differently because of their race. When traveling to other towns, one former coach says they were not always welcome at restaurants and convenience stores in addition to the playing field.

A recent incident that occurred at a game between the Todd County's predominantly Indian team and Stanley County's mostly white team is indicative of these problems, they say. Members of the crowd taunted Indian players with racial slurs but no action has been taken because Stanley County school officials haven't identified any student who participated.
