EDITORIAL: Kevin Gover and Ethics

JANUARY 26, 2001 Using departed BIA head Kevin Gover as an example, The New London Day in an editorial today says President George W. Bush should get rid of an exemption to ethics laws regarding tribes. Ethics laws provide a "cooling off" period for most political appointees, preventing them from lobbying before agencies and departments which employed them. But tribal lobbyists are exempt. The paper calls such an exemption "absurd" since tribes aren't "disadvantaged." They cite financial backing of tribes today, Gover's previous work as a lobbyist, and his new job. Prior to Gover entering the BIA, the paper appears never to have questioned his long career as lawyer or lobbyist. Get the Story:
