Rainbow family convictions upheld

DECEMBER 15, 2000

The convictions of three members of the Rainbow Family were upheld by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday.

The members had tried to get their three month prison sentences and fines overturned. They were convicted for not obtaining public gathering permits from the US Forest Service, required when more than 75 people intend to gather in a national park. Rainbow Park gatherings draw as many as 20,000 people.

The Rainbow Family says they are loosely organized and not a "group," therefore they shouldn't have to obtain a permit. But government lawyers say the fact that they can get so many people to show up to their gatherings indicates their nature as a group.
