Use of Crazy Horse name protested

DECEMBER 12, 2000

On Monday, a group of Oglala Lakota tribal members held a protest in New York City, decrying clothes-maker Liz Claiborne's use of Crazy Horse's name in a product line.

The group also urged a boycott of JC Penney, who carries the line. In response, the Claiborne company said it will work with tribal leaders to find a solution to the issue, while JC Penney said they take the protest seriously.

Descendants of Crazy Horse last month filed a lawsuit against a beverage company for using his name and a likeness on a malt liquor product. Although Congress in 1992 passed a law preventing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms from approving the use of the name on any alcoholic beverage, it was ruled unconstitutional.
