Sacred pole part of tribe's culture

NOVEMBER 14, 2000

Members of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska recently held a ceremony for the sacred pole, or Venerable Man, a central part of the tribe's culture.

The ceremony was held to place the pole at a 45-degree angle and to face the North Star. For the past 100 years or so, he has been in the possession of others, including the Peabody Museum in Harvard, preventing him from being properly treated.

Currently, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is taking care of the pole for the tribe. The tribe hopes to build a museum first before bringing him home.
