Boycott of 'squaw' resort urged

OCTOBER 5, 2000 David "Spirit Bear" Walton, an Indian activist, is calling for a boycott of the Big Squaw Mountain ski resort in Maine due to the owner's insistence on keeping the name. Walton helped institute a Maine law passed earlier this year requiring public place names containing "squaw" to be changed. But the law does not affect private property. Jim Confalone said he believes "squaw" is a term of endearment and is not offensive. He claims Walton and a "small band of Indians" were able to get the law passed because they "ambushed" the legislature. Get the Story:
